Before designing your homemade popcorn box, picture how you would like the end result to be. For example, if you need customized popcorn boxes to complement a theme you have for your child’s party, go for the same colors, text fonts, and images.
If on the other hand, you want to come up with something creative for an occasion where you don’t have a theme already, follow this simple method.
Think of the person or the celebration you want to make the popcorn boxes for, and write down the first things that come to your mind about that person or observance. Come up with their favorite color, their likes, the reason for the celebration, and so on. Then convert these words or phrases into images. In this manner you will get inspiration on how you will be designing your popcorn box.
We use this method to come up with eye-catching party banners and custom chip bags made at home. Check How To Make An Eye-Catching Party Banner for an in-depth explanation and illustrations about this method.
When you are happy with the idea, get on your computer or laptop to start your popcorn box design.
1. How to design custom popcorn boxes on a word processor
Download our free printable popcorn box template.
Open a new blank document in Word, Pages, or Google Docs and choose landscape from page setup.
Drag the template on a blank page.
Resize the image to the desired dimensions. We recommend extending the image to fill the entire page.
Change the page background to the color you have in mind for your popcorn box. You can also insert a picture or a pattern, but be careful of too much clutter when you insert images or other designs in the background.
- If you are using Microsoft Word, go to Design > Page Color > Theme Colors or Standard Colors.
- If you are working on Pages (Mac), click on Document (top right-hand corner) > Section > Background.
- If you are editing on Google Docs, select File > Page Setup > Page Color.
Add a text box and write the text you wish to have on the sides of the box. Change the text color and size as you wish. We used Comica BD Bold > Regular > 25pt to make the popcorn box for this guide.
Print as many copies as you need on white Letter or A4 thick paper or card stock.
Cut along the outer perimeter of the box template.
You are now ready to assemble the homemade popcorn boxes.
2. How to assemble DIY popcorn boxes
Fold the edges of the cut out as indicated on the template.
Use double-sided roller tape or glue stick to attach the side of the box.
Stick together the bottom flaps as indicated on the template. Then fold to form the base of the box.
You can now fill to the brim your custom-made boxes with your favorite popcorn.
