1. How to come up with an original idea for a party sign
If you have already decided on the party theme, go with the same colors, text fonts, and images. If, for example, you’re planning a pirate-themed party, pick white, black, red, and a hint of gold. Choose fonts such as Treasuremap and Jackpirate which can be found for free at fontspace.com. Don’t forget the unmistakable Jolly Roger flag, skulls, bones, ship wheels, and spy glasses.
If you’re interested in organizing a pirate-themed party go to Amazing Pirate Party Ideas For Kids.
If, on the other hand you haven’t yet settled on a theme or you don’t want one, we have developed a simple system to come up with great ideas for a party sign that is relevant to the celebration you are after.
This is how it’s done. Think of the person or the remembrance you’ll be celebrating, and take note of what comes first to your mind. Consider their favorite color, their age if you will be celebrating their birthday, their favorite sport or toy, and so on. Don’t go beyond five or six items.
Next, convert what you have on paper into mental images to form the basis of your party sign. We explain this process in more detail, together with illustrations in How To Make An Eye-Catching Party Banner.

You are now ready to start making your party sign on a word processor. We will be illustrating the steps to produce a DIY sign using a birthday party theme.
2. How do you make your custom sign
Open a new blank document in Word, Pages, or Google Docs.
If you want an upright sign choose portrait from page settings. Go for landscape if you want it to be horizontally oriented.
Change the page background to the color you have in mind for your sign. You can also insert a picture or a pattern, but be careful of too much clutter when you insert images or other designs in the background.
- If you are using Microsoft Word, go to Design > Page Color > Theme Colors or Standard Colors.
- If you are working on Pages (Mac), click on Document (top right-hand corner) > Section > Background.
- If you are editing on Google Docs, select File > Page Setup > Page Color.
Then insert a rectangle with rounded edges or an oval on the page background, leaving a border of roughly an inch (2.5cm) all around. Assign a white or very light hue to the shape you have chosen.
Add a border line to the shape and give it a tint that compliments the background color. In our case, we used a border line of 14pt.
Following this, insert a text box in the middle of the shape and write your message. Keep it to just a few words, so that you can enlarge the text as much as possible. We prefer to use one font for party signs, but if you wish to use more, don’t exceed two. Here we used Impact font, sizes 80 and 100.
Add images from the list you have come up in the ideation stage. Be careful not to make the sign look cluttered with too many pictures.
Next, print your design and mount it on a piece of cardboard the same size. You can utilize cardstock or thick paper as well. Use double-sided roller tape or glue stick to attach your party sign to the cardboard.
Voila, your custom-made party sign is ready.
3. How to hang a party sign
Punch two holes at the top of the sign, by placing a paper puncher precisely at the mid-point of the cardboard.
Then run a ribbon or a string through both holes as shown in the illustration below. You may like to tie the ribbon with a bowknot on the front of the sign or else fasten the ends with a tight knot and hide it at the back of the sign.
4. How do you make a party sign stand
Alternatively, you can attach a cardboard stand to the back of the party sign to make it stand upright.
Cut the stand from a piece of cardboard, as shown here.
Use the tip of closed scissors and run a line from top to bottom. Fold the cardboard where the line lies.
Finally, glue the stand to the party sign as shown below.
5. How to use DIY signs at your party venue
Signs are most commonly used at a party to welcome guests as they enter the party venue. Typically they are placed at the side of the entrance or fastened to sticks and displayed on the front lawn. The latter are referred to as yard signs.
Moreover, signs can be used as part of your party venue decor. You can scatter party signs all over the place with messages that are relevant to the celebration.
For our son’s 12th birthday we organized a neon party and used party signs to hype up the place with phrases such as, “Let’s Glow”, “A Neon Dream” and “You Glow Guys”.

6. Making party signs in larger sizes using printer paper
If you need a sizeable party sign, you can still use the same process to design an A4/Letter size one and then go through the following steps to make it bigger. You can construct a sign twice, four times, eight times bigger, or even larger.
When you finish your A4/Letter size design on the word processor, insert faint lines to divide it into the number of parts that correspond to how much bigger you need it to be. Here we have sectioned it into four parts since we will be making a party sign that is four times bigger than A4/Letter size.
Export your design to PDF and insert it again in another blank document.
Enlarge the design so that each part – one at a time – will cover the whole document area. Print the first part. Then drag the image so that the second part covers the document area. Print it and repeat until you have printed all parts.
Be careful to leave a margin all around since most home printers cannot print over all the print area.
Cut along the border and the faint lines, and glue all the parts on cardboard or cardstock. Trim the edges of the cardboard for a neat look.
There you have it. An extra large party sign made on a word processor using printer paper.
