    11. Pirate-themed Cupcakes

    pirate-party-sweets

Admittedly, adults and kids alike love cupcakes at a kid’s party, even though they are not a must-have. You can decide to outsource the pirate cupcakes if you prefer. Many confectioner or cake shops will give you a selection of pirate-themed designs for you to choose your perfect cupcakes from and have them ready for you to pick up on party day.

Alternatively, you could make your own.

If you have a cupcake recipe you usually use, go with that. If not, try out our tried-and-tested one from the article The Ultimate Super Simple Cake Recipe in 7 Easy Steps. This recipe is for cake, but works equally well for cupcakes too.

    What you need

    • Cupcakes
    • Cupcake wrappers (or liners if making your own)
    • Butter icing
    • 2 piping bags
    • Your preferred piping bag tips or nozzles
    • Red food coloring
    • Sprinkles in red, gold and silver
    • Treasure chests with mini smarties
    • Pirate coins
    • Pirate flags
    • Pirate sword cocktail sticks

    How to prepare Pirate-themed Cupcakes

    • Assuming you already have the cupcakes, it is time to decorate. 🙂
    • Prepare the butter icing as per packet instructions (unless you would have bought some ready-made).
    • Divide the mixture into two bowls and set one aside. Add some red food coloring to the other one, making sure you mix it through.
    • Now transfer the contents of the two bowls into two separate piping bags, making sure you attach the piping tips.
    • Decorate half your cupcakes with white icing and the rest with red.
    • Then, be creative with your designs, creating contrasts with the colored sprinkles. You can have some of your cupcakes topped with smarties-filled treasure chests, others with a couple golden pirate sword cocktail sticks against each other. Top a few with golden pirate coins and Jolly Roger flags or other pirate-themed cut-outs on toothpicks.

Pro Tip: If using buttercream is not something you fancy, use fondant instead. Cut out circles in red, white and black fondant. Place them on the cupcakes (if your cupcakes are not flat at the top, slice off the extra). Then decorate as explained above.

Caution: If you happen to have very young guests, be extra careful. Go for edible toppers for extra safety and peace of mind.

    How to serve

    • What better way to serve cupcakes than displayed on a cupcake stand. Since your cupcakes are pirate-themed, a plain cupcake stand will do nicely. But if you want to keep in theme, pirate cupcake stands are available too.

    12. Pirate-themed Cake

    pirate-party-sweets

Your pirate-themed cake can be as simple or elaborate as you desire. If you wish to outsource it, it will save you a lot time. All you would need to do is choose a design available at your favorite confectioner’s or cake shop, book your cake, give them the name and age of your kid and have your cake delivered or pick it up yourself on party day.

If you have the time though and are up for the challenge, you may wish to have a go at creating your kid’s pirate-themed cake yourself. This is actually much simpler than you think, even if you have very little experience with baking and decorating cakes. Often times, kids love seeing a simple plain cake come to life.

One super easy option if you want to make a pirate-themed cake is to skip the baking and go straight for the decorating. Get your hands on a plain store-bought round cake in the flavor you desire.

If the cake happens to be shallow (2 inches), get two or three, to stack on each other. You could experiment with flavors, such as getting two vanilla ones and a chocolate one to go in between. This will look nice when cut.

If you want to try baking your own cake, you may wish to use our easy cake recipe: The Ultimate Super Simple Cake Recipe in 7 Easy Steps

Buy a tub or two of ready-made butter icing if you don’t want to prepare the butter icing yourself. Use this to gel the layers of your pirate-themed cake together and cover the entire cake.

Next, cut out strips of red fondant. Place the strips running down from the centre of the top of your cake to the sides, making sure you leave an equal amount of space in between the strips for uniformity.

This is what will take most of your time as it is practically all of your decoration. Use black fondant to cut out letters to form the name of the child. Place each letter on the strips running down the side of the cake.

Should you wish to, add other edible, store-bought pirate toppers around the cake.

Think ahead and buy pirate action figures and other accessories, like small treasure chests or swords, if you do not happen to have some already. Use these to finish off decorating your pirate-themed cake.

You may actually find sets, including a number of pirates and accessories such as a pirate ship, palm trees, a treasure chest, a rowing boat, a canon and canon balls, a rum barrel or two and occasionally even an octopus 🙂

Experiment by placing the figures in different places on and around the cake. Congratulate yourself on making your first-ever pirate-themed cake. Well done 🙂

If your budget is tight, you could even have the pirate action figures set double as gift for your little one. Let him open the gift a few hours or days before the party and get him to help you decorate the cake on party day. Win-win!

Do not forget to display your lovely pirate-themed cake on a cake stand for all to see and marvel at.
